INTRODUCTION BARNYARDGRASS
Barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli var. crus-galli) is a monocot weed in the Poaceae family.  In Thailand this weed first evolved resistance to Group A/1 herbicides in 2001 and infests Rice.   Group A/1 herbicides are known as ACCase inhibitors (Inhibition of acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACCase)).  Research has shown that these particular biotypes are resistant to cyhalofop-butyl, fenoxaprop-P-ethyl, and quizalofop-P-tefuryl and they may be cross-resistant to other Group A/1 herbicides.

GENERAL

Three populations of barnyardgrass developed resistance to fenoxaprop-p-ethyl after exposure to at least ten applications.A population,PT-56,showed 4-7 fold resistance to fenoxaprop.Likewise,this population was 8-and 13-fold resistance to quizalofop-p-tefuryl and cyhalofop-butyl, respectively.The susceptible barnyardgrass population collected from a nontreated area was completely controlled with fenoxaprop,quizalofop and cyhalofop at the rates of 150,50 and 200 g ai/ha,respectively.However,PT-56 was effectively controlled by recommended rates of either clefoxydim or quinclorac.

Confirmation Tests

Field, and Greenhouse trials comparing a known susceptible Barnyardgrass biotype with this Barnyardgrass biotype have been used to confirm resistance. For further information on the tests conducted please contact the local weed scientists that provided this information.
 
Genetics

Genetic studies on Group A/1 resistant Barnyardgrass have not been reported to the site.  There may be a note below or an article discussing the genetics of this biotype in the Fact Sheets and Other Literature
